This course provides information about Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), suggested patient history questions, clinical examination criteria, and methods of treatment and how to help patients self-manage their TMD pain and symptoms under the guidance of the dental professional.

When you complete a continuing education course on dentalcare.com, a form will come up that requests your name, address, etc.  If you are a member of the AGD, make sure to fill out the field that asks for your AGD membership number (if you are not an AGD member, leave blank).  When you hit submit, a copy of the "proof of completion" is e-mailed directly to the AGD and P&G.  For your records, make sure to print a copy of the "proof of completion" certificate.

Ms. Huggins is a Research Manager and Affiliate Instructor of the Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ) and Facial Pain research program in the Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, University of Washington.  She has participated in the development of clinical research protocols for many different research studies.  She is an expert on the implementation of clinical research studies and the development of documents and processes that inform the Human Subjects aspects of this research.  She participates in research data acquisition, data analysis, and preparation of research manuscripts.  She is also the Principal Investigator of an NIDCR PRECEDENT (Practice Based Research Network) survey of dentists and their attitudes and beliefs related to patients with special needs.  She has been conducting NIDCR funded research related to TMD and other facial pain conditions since 1985.

This course is based on a body of research funded for over 20 years by NIDCR.  The research has investigated the epidemiology of TMD, the relationship between physical, behavioral and psychosocial factors; and controlled clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of biobehavioral treatments.  The research has been carried out under Principal Investigators Edmond Truelove, DDS, MSD, and Samuel F. Dworkin, DDS, PhD.  Ms. Huggins has served as a co-Investigator.
