Sealants

The placement of sealants is a noninvasive procedure and an integral part of a caries prevention plan. The biting surfaces of permanent teeth with deep, narrow pits and fissures are susceptible to the caries process and are not well protected by topical fluorides or by controlling the frequent consumption of fermentable carbohydrates. In the presence of high caries rate/risk, primary teeth may also be considered candidates for sealant application.

Plastic sealant material acts as a physical barrier that prevents the acid demineralization of enamel and should be placed within 6 months to 1 year of eruption.

Dental sealants are available in an opaque, tinted, or clear form. Tinted and opaque sealants are easier to detect at subsequent dental examinations.

Ninety percent of sealants are in place after 1 year, 50% after 10 years, and 30% after 15 years. Sealants are easily repaired or replaced if necessary.
