Overview

Orthodontic treatment can be about more than creating a beautiful smile. As clinicians increasingly recognize the relationship between craniofacial development, airway health, and overall wellness, Invisalign has become an important tool in comprehensive treatment planning. However, both airway-related conditions such as mouth breathing and the use of aligner therapy can create unique challenges for the oral environment, including increased biofilm accumulation, gingival inflammation, enamel demineralization, and shifts in the oral microbiome. This course explores the intersection of airway health, Invisalign treatment, and preventive home care strategies, highlighting how evidence-based oral hygiene protocols can support healthier outcomes throughout treatment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the relationship between craniofacial development, orthodontic treatment, and airway health, and identify ways Invisalign may support broader functional treatment goals.
  • Describe how airway-related conditions, particularly mouth breathing, can alter the oral microbiome and contribute to increased risks for caries, gingival inflammation, and oral disease.
  • Recognize how aligner therapy influences the oral environment, including its effects on plaque retention, biofilm accumulation, and oral hygiene challenges.
  • Understand the combined impact of airway dysfunction and aligner wear on oral health, and identify strategies to minimize these risks during treatment.
  • Evaluate the role of advanced oral hygiene technologies and stannous fluoride formulations in controlling biofilm, reducing gingival inflammation, protecting enamel, and supporting a healthier oral microbiome.
  • Implement practical home care recommendations with Crest products that help patients maintain optimal oral health while undergoing Invisalign treatment and pursuing airway-focused treatment goals.
