Overview

Dental hygiene education requires faculty to teach more than clinical facts and procedures. Students must learn how to interpret patient information, prioritize findings, and translate assessment data into appropriate patient care decisions. This faculty calibration program explores strategies for guiding students through case-based clinical decision-making while creating greater consistency between didactic instruction, clinical teaching and board preparation.

A central focus on Provision of Patient Care will examine several areas where students commonly struggle to move from knowing a concept to appropriately applying it, including levels of prevention, ASA classification, individualized biofilm management, and the distinction between professional intervention and person-centered home care. Rather than simply reviewing correct answers, faculty will explore how to teach the reasoning that leads to the best clinical decision.
