Pit and fissure sealants should be checked annually (Figure 20). If some or all of the material has been lost, it should be replaced. Regular radiographs are helpful to follow the success of this procedure. Parents and patients must be educated about the importance of re-evaluating the sealants and an overall preventive dentistry regimen including proper homecare, fluoride exposure (either systemic and/or topical) and the avoidance of cariogenic foods and drinks.
