Demineralization and remineralization is a dynamic process of mineral loss from the hard tissue of the tooth and of its repair. These are not distinct processes; rather, both occur to some extent on tooth surfaces at any given time. Which process “wins” is dependent on several factors in the oral environment, such as the frequency of sucrose consumption and the status of saliva, and whether these factors create an environment that favors demineralization or remineralization. Clearly, the goal in dental practice is to help the patient maintain an oral environment that both prevents demineralization and enhances remineralization to prevent the formation of caries.
