Nonverbal individuals will lack coordination in muscles and may be drool. The parents/caregivers may also complain the individual is a very messy eater. One simple recommendation is to have the child suck on a sugar free candy. This will help them practice swallowing more frequently and with coaching can be taught to swallow frequently throughout the day. The ideal treatment would be for the individual to be assessed and treated by an orofacial myofunctional therapist. These therapists help individuals learn chew, breathe, and swallow correctly.
