Most restorative products and impression materials perform best in the absence of saliva and blood. Consequently, as we continually strive to maintain a dry operative field, it is difficult to think of saliva as an important indicator of good oral and, at times, systemic health. A review of the physiology of salivation and the dynamics of its many constituents provides for a balanced appreciation for this most important body fluid.
