Preventive and Therapeutic Strategies

When natural defense mechanisms are no longer able to prevent disease, it is the responsibility of healthcare providers to determine the nature of the problem (diagnosis and etiology); evaluate the patient’s needs; and develop and implement appropriate preventive, palliative, and, when possible, therapeutic strategies to improve health. It is axiomatic, that an important element of the success of the clinical process is the oral healthcare provider’s awareness of the availability, advantages, and limitations of diagnostic, palliative, and therapeutic adjuncts.32
