Previous Periodontal Disease

Prospective studies have shown that patients with history of generalized aggressive periodontitis are more susceptible to peri-implantitis.20 Subgingival tissues around implants show higher levels of periopathogenic and superinfecting bacteria compared to sites from non-periodontal disease patients.21 Other studies have found that while implants are a viable treatment option in sockets affected by chronic periapical pathoses, the risk of implant failure is increased when placed adjacent to teeth with periapical radiolucencies.22
