The most significant risk factor for developing AD is age.1 The majority of AD cases are diagnosed in individuals age 65 and older. In fact, 11% of individuals age 65 and older have AD. The number increases to 32% for individuals age 85 and older.1,13 It is important to recognize; however, that AD is “not a normal part of aging.” Scientists are learning age-related changes in the brain may contribute to neuron damage.9
