Systemic Disease

Systemic diseases that cause oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and periodontal disease, have been implicated as possible risk factors for developing AD.11,12,19-22 This is thought to be a result of the effect of the inflammation associated with these diseases on increasing brain amyloid-β plaque load. This decreases the number of neurotransmitters important for memory and learning.
