It can be concluded that the risk of major medical events (MMEs) in association with dental procedures is low. In low-stress situations the likelihood of myocardial infarction, cardiac death, severe hyperglycemia, Addisonian crisis, or a thyroid storm) is <1%.15 Yet, in some clinical situations, the risk of perioperative endocrine and/or metabolic problems may be elevated. This suggests that patient-specific risk factors, and not dental procedure-related stress, are at play.
