Oro-facial Pain and Salivary Biomarkers

The prevalence of oro-facial pain is about 10% in the adult population.47 It may be a primary problem such as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), neuropathic pain, and headaches; it may be a postoperative complication; or it may be connected with a malignancy. TMDs affect approximately 10 million people in the United States. Salivary cortisol and melatonin levels are significantly altered in TMDs, but point-of-care diagnostics are not available.48
