Numerous saliva substitutes or hydrating products are marketed to patients with salivary dysfunction. Most are available over-the-counter (OTC) and are composed of carboxymethylcellulose, mucins, xanthan gum, hydroxyethylcellulose, linseed oil, or polyethylene oxide.7 Patient acceptance of these products is variable and studies demonstrating conclusive clinical efficacy are lacking.
