Exposed root surfaces are more irregular and porous and, therefore, more plaque-retentive than enamel. These surfaces are higher in organic content and more susceptible to dental decay. Topical fluorides of 5000 ppm (part per million) concentration are effective at aiding remineralization and enhancing caries resistance by increasing the fluoride content of surface hard tissue.
