Evaluate the Exposed Person

The exposed person should be evaluated within two hours after exposure to determine his/her HBV vaccination and response status; and, to establish the HIV status at the time of exposure (baseline), the exposed person should be tested for HIV.30 Antiretroviral postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) should not be delayed while waiting for test results. Once the source patient is determined to be HIV-negative, PEP should be discontinued, and no follow-up HIV testing for the exposed provider is indicated.30
