Gingival Diseases of Genetic Origin

Some gingival changes may occur as the result of genetic predisposition.

Hereditary Gingival Fibromatosis

Gingival enlargement, commonly known as ‘hyperplasia’ or ‘hypertrophy’, is pathologic overgrowth of the gingiva. This enlargement may be caused by overreaction to plaque/biofilm, infections or side effects of systemic conditions or medications. Because of the potential for a systemic disease, the patient should be referred for a medical evaluation if the enlargement does not resolve with proper plaque/biofilm control.
