Pigmented Gingiva

Color – Pigmented gingiva occurs because of melanin in the tissue. Variations occur with complexion and race.

  • Darker pigmentation of the gingiva is normal in African Americans, Asians, Indians and Caucasians of Mediterranean countries
  • Usually limited to the band of keratinized gingiva
  • Color is associated with melanin
