Salme E Lavigne

Salme Lavigne received her dental hygiene education from the University of Toronto, a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Anthropology from Lakehead University, a Master of Science degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, School of Dentistry, and a PhD in Community health and Epidemiology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. She also received certification in Advanced Periodontics and Local Anesthesia from Northern Arizona University and Nitrous Oxide Sedation from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.


Dr. Lavigne has over 35 years’ experience in Dental Hygiene Education and administration in both Canada and the United States, including Professor and Director of the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba. She taught periodontics to both dental and dental hygiene students and local anesthesia and microbiology & infectious diseases to dental hygiene students.


Dr. Lavigne is the author of numerous peer reviewed journal articles as well as three textbook chapters. She is a popular speaker who has delivered over 100 continuing education and research presentations in Canada, the United States, Scandinavia, China, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy and South Africa. She has also held several professional offices, most notably the Presidency of the Canadian Dental Hygienists' Association; Councilor, Section on Dental Hygiene Education for the American Dental Education Association, and was a commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. She is currently a Senior Scholar at the University of Manitoba and Scientific Editor of the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene (CJDH).
