Healthcare-associated Exposure to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

The HPV is transmitted from person-to-person primarily by direct contact through cuts, small tears, or abrasions in skin or mucous membranes. While vaccines are available for active immunization of HPV-susceptible individuals, there is no recommendation for PEP.12 When a person with probable or confirmed HPV infection of the oral cavity visits an oral healthcare facility, strict adherence to the principles of Standard and Transmission-based Precautions is the best means to minimize occupational exposure.2,3 Exposed HCP should be monitored for sign(s) of infection.
