Consistency – The consistency of the gingiva varies on the degree of health, density, and firmness of the tissue.

Edematous Gingiva – The tissue is enlarged:

  • Enlargement of marginal and interproximal gingival tissues
  • Results from collagen loss and an accumulation of interstitial fluid
  • Tissues are easily compressed with a blunt instrument
  • Diffuse redness
  • Smooth shiny surface and loss of stippling
