Healthy Gingiva

Color – The color of the gingiva may vary depending on vascular supply, thickness and degree of keratinization of the epithelium, degree of gingival health, and the presence of melanin pigmentation. The color may also vary depending on the location of the epithelium: attached gingiva, unattached gingiva, or alveolar mucosa.

Healthy Gingiva – The following descriptors are characteristics of healthy gingiva:

  • Knife-edged marginal gingiva
  • Pink in color
  • Pointed papillae filling interproximal space
  • Moderately scalloped contours
  • Firm, stippled attached gingiva
  • Well demarcated mucogingival junction
  • No bleeding or exudate
