Practical Panoramic Imaging

Course Number: 589

Introduction

Panoramic radiographic imaging provides the dental practitioner with an easily obtained curved-plane image of the dental arches and their supporting structures.1 Widely used in dentistry, panoramic imaging serves as an important diagnostic technical tool for oral disease diagnoses.2 This tomographic imaging modality is technique-sensitive and requires accurate patient positioning to obtain diagnostic results and avoid patient re-exposure. Prior to performing any radiographic imaging procedure, it is prudent for the dentist to ensure that the benefits of the examination will outweigh the risks associated with the ionizing radiation exposure.3,4 This task is best accomplished through the application of evidenced-based radiographic selection criteria.3,4
