Full Mouth Survey Arrangement

Anatomic landmarks can be used by the clinician to check for accurate radiographic image arrangement and confirm proper location prior to interpretation. Table 3 provides full mouth survey arrangement checks that can help ensure image placement accuracy before diagnostic and treatment planning processes are completed.

Accurate location of key maxillary anatomic landmarks:
maxillary tuberosity, zygomatic process, maxillary sinus, inverted Y, nasal fossae
Accurate location of key mandibular anatomic landmarks:
External oblique ridge, mandibular canal, mental foramen, genial tubercle, lingual foramen
Correct tooth order:
The periapical sequence of the teeth are arranged 1-32, from molars, premolars, canine, lateral incisor, central incisor, lateral incisor, canine, premolars, molars on both arches, patient’s right to left. Bitewing sequence are arranged from molars, premolars, canine to canine, premolars, molars on both sides, patient’s right to left.
Smile appearance:
The bitewings and the survey in general should have a smile appearance with a slight upward curve posteriorly.
Restorative treatments and/or missing teeth match:
Restorative treatments of the teeth and/or missing teeth should match periapical to periapical and bitewing to bitewing across the survey.
