Although large-scale methamphetamine production has shifted primarily to transnational criminal organizations using phenyl-2-propanone (P2P) manufacturing methods, clandestine methamphetamine laboratories continue to be encountered in some areas of the United States. Dental professionals should be aware that these laboratories remain hazardous because of the toxic chemicals, fire and explosion risks, and environmental contamination associated with illicit drug production.2,3
Potential indicators of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory include:
Unusual chemical odors (e.g., ammonia, ether, or solvents)
Excessive chemical containers or laboratory equipment
Unusual security measures or surveillance systems
Excessive traffic at unusual hours
Large quantities of discarded chemical waste or household products associated with illicit drug production
If a suspected methamphetamine laboratory is encountered, personal safety is the primary consideration. Dental professionals should not enter, investigate, or attempt to remediate the site. Immediately leave the area and notify local law enforcement or emergency responders. Avoid contact with chemical residues, contaminated materials, or potentially hazardous vapors.2,3
Former methamphetamine laboratories may remain contaminated after drug production has ceased. Cleanup and environmental remediation should be performed only by appropriately trained personnel in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements.2
