Hematologists and Hemophilia Treatment Centers
The most important aspect of treatment planning is collaborating with the patient’s hematologist or HTC. HTCs were the country’s first medical homes chartered through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Originally, oral health was a mandated piece of comprehensive care provided by HTCs, but today many HTCs lack in-house oral health care providers.
Currently, HTCs are specialized healthcare centers that bring together a team of hematologists, nurses, physical therapists, social workers and other professionals experienced in treating people with hemophilia55 Comprehensive HTCs emphasize prevention services to help reduce or eliminate complications. These services include using preventive medicine, connecting patients with community groups that provide education and support to families, and providing access to multidisciplinary healthcare professionals including dental providers.56
