Periodontal Treatment

When creating a treatment plan for periodontal therapy, there are several considerations and potential modifications to ensure treatment is delivered safely. If the patient presents requiring subgingival procedures, factor replacement along with additional antifibrinolytics is necessary and to be determined by the patient’s hematologist/HTC.48 It is the primary responsibility of the dentist to accurately describe the hemostatic challenge to the hematology team. A patient with severe periodontal disease will bleed much more profusely as opposed to a patient with healthy periodontium and will need to be managed accordingly. The use of lasers for periodontal therapy is an acceptable treatment methodology and preferred over more traditional techniques due to the decrease in trauma to the gingival tissue.49
