Restorative, Prosthodontic, and Endodontic Treatment
Provided care is taken by the dental provider to protect mucosal tissues, routine restorative procedures are recommended when indicated. There is an increased risk for bleeding with the use of matrix bands or wooden wedges, but this can be controlled by the use of local anesthetics or the application of topical agents.41
As long as it is comfortable for the patient, full and partial removable prostheses are considered safe treatments with proper monitoring for pressure areas. In the case of partial dentures, it is important that the periodontal health of the remaining teeth be maintained.42 Endodontic treatment is also considered a safe, generally low risk in-office procedure. In endodontic cases where bleeding from the vital pulp is prolonging pain, this can be eliminated by irrigation with 4% sodium hypochlorite followed by the use of calcium hydroxide to control the bleeding.43
