Considerations for Acquired and Inherited Blood Disorders

Course Number: 685

Post-Operative Management

Patients with bleeding disorders must be observed longer than the average patient to monitor for post- operative complications.

For post-operative management of patients with bleeding disorders, the dental provider should consider the following:

  • To achieve good hemostasis use sutures, topical hemostatic agents, and mechanical pressure when indicated.

  • In the case of dental extractions or surgery, instruct the patient to apply physical pressure on gauze pre-treated with hemostatic agents to observe for proper hemostasis.

  • Keep the patient in the office longer to observe for proper hemostasis.

  • In the case the patient develops a liver clot, a result of the continued disruption of the clotting process, the patient will need additional factor infusion. The dental provider will need to consult with the patient’s hematologist/HTC to determine a treatment plan for debriding the site to remove any material/foreign bodies contributing to the formation of the liver clot inclusive of additional factor infusion.

  • Schedule surgical procedures early in the week in case a post operative or emergency issue should arise.
